Gaming Glut

October 18, 2007 by Galyn

Life as a gamer can get pretty overwhelming. Lately it seems as if there’s been a glut of games to play. And while this is not exactly a bad thing, it makes it hard to keep up, or even finish a game. Especially for me, as I tend to have the attention span of a gnat.

However, I can proudly say that I have finished Bioshock. Excellent game, though as Argyle and I have discussed the game would have been better if it were shorter. I’d go into specifics, but there is still the possibility that someone is slower at beating a game than I am, don’t want to spoil anything for them.

Currently I’ve set aside Persona 3 and Okami to start on Eternal Sonata. I wasn’t really expecting to pick it up yet since the PS3 version promised to have exclusive content, but the wife saw the packaging and demanded that I purchase it. How could I refuse? So far the game is excellent, though I do have a hard time staying awake sometimes; the music is just too soothing.

I, in my typical fashion, was almost completely oblivious about Eternal Sonata until after I started playing the game. I tend to shy away from information about a game to avoid getting hyped up about it. At most I knew that the game was rated highly, and some of our local Gamestop employees were raving about it. If you haven’t figured it out by the plethora of previews, reviews, and snippets of the game out on the web, this game is all about music, specifically Chopin’s music.

I was completely unaware that the game spends several minutes between each chapter to give you a history lesson. I can’t quite make up my mind of how I feel about this. On one hand, it’s nice to learn about something that I wouldn’t otherwise normally take the effort to learn, and I applaud the developer for trying to teach people something. On the other, it was completely unexpected, and seems somewhat heavy-handed in the way that they handle it.

Games can be educational and fun, but this is: “Let’s take 5 minutes of time to show you some pictures of Chopin’s hangouts and teach you about the piece of music to which you’re currently listening.” It’s a bit off-putting. Oh well, it’s definitely not a game-breaker. It’s just–different. We all fear change, right?

Oh yeah, speaking of change: website overhaul, different looks, new engine, blah blah blah blah–I have web ADD.

The few games that I’ve mentioned here don’t even begin to touch the number that are actually out, or coming out that I’d like to play at some point. Next week Eye of Judgment (or The Judgmental Eye, as I’ve come to affectionately refer to it) comes out, thankfully I was able to trade some of my older stuff in to get it on pre-order.

I’ve already missed the releases of Heavenly Sword and Lair. Team Fortress 2 and Portal have been taunting me, however I’ve managed to remain strong in resisting the urge to go ahead and buy the PC version; I’m waiting on the PS3 version so that Argyle and some of our friends can play together, though I’m sure I will pick up the PC version at some point.

There are more games that I could mention, but I’m going to stop now; too many games, and not enough time. This is the tale of the gamer.
